とき
Means ‘time (s)’ in Japanese, but translates as ‘when’
Eg つかれた時… 〜 When i am tired
How do you connect a な adjective to the とき structure?
Add な or past plain tense ending
Eg しずかなとき - When it is quiet
しずかじゃないとき - When it isn’t quiet
1〜なければ ならない
2〜なければいけない
1〜 I have to
Verb plain negative form + drop ない
2〜 You have to
Verb plain negative form + drop ない
Saying ’don’t’ or ’without doing’ and ’instead of
〜ないで
〜ないでください
Using て
て can be used to indicate a reason (such as kara)
Or be used to make negative forms Eg
食べなくて〜 Don’t eat and…
て よかった
“I’m glad”
と言う
Used to report what someone else says
E.g
まさおくんは電車に間にあわなかったと言った。
Masao said he missed the train
何と言う?
= What is it?
E.g
これは何と言う?
What is this called
てみる
Means ‘I’ll try and see”
Eg さしみを食べてみませんか。
Would you like to try and eat some sashimi (and see what it’s like?)
てしまう
Usually connected to verb て forms to show that the action described by the verb て form has been finished/done to completion
eg
ゆうべこの本読んでしまった。
I finished reading this book last night
