Informal situations
Dictionaries – verbs are always written in their plain form in dictionaries.
As part of more complex grammar patterns

How do you change weak/ichidan verbs to plain present positive form?
A
Remove ますand add る

How do you identify if a verb is weak?
A
The verb stem will usually end in an え sound or an い sound

How do you change strong/godan verbs to plain present positive form?
A
Remove ます and change the last hiragana character of the stem to the うline of the same column of the hiragana chart.
e.g. よみます becomes よむ
