Unit 4 Portable And Specialty Equipment Flashcards
ICU | Intensive Care Unit
Special care units designed for patients in critical condition whose treatment and status require constant monitoring.
•Medical Surgical
• Trauma
• Covid
• Neonatal (NICU)
• Pediatric (PICU)
Monitoring of:
•Vital Signs
•Temperature
•Cardiovascular function
•Intracranial pressure
-IV pumps/drips
-Ventilator
-Dialysis machines
-Wound Vac
-Restraints
NICU | Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
•Premature or low birth weight infants
•Cardiac, Urinary, GI, Skeletal anomalies
•Exams:
•PCXR/Abdomen (Babygram)
•Extremity studies
* Keeping patients warm is important!
PACU | Post Anesthesia Care Unit aka Recovery Room
Close observation of patients after operative procedures with anesthesia
Exams:
-PCXR
-Extremity studies involving joint replacement/ hardware (2 view)
Patient Care Procedures or Precautions
-Patients are not able to follow instructions as they are recovering from anesthesia
-Patients may complain of being cold (due to effects of anesthesia and the OR is cold)
ER | Emergency Trauma Unit
-Patients on backboard
-May be intoxicated, belligerent, altered mental state with a variety of injuries CPR may be in progress
-Trauma team consists of physicians, nurses, lab, respiratory therapists
Swan-Ganz Catheters
-Placed in pulmonary artery
-Measures cardiac output, pressures on the right side of the heart
-Provides information regarding ventricular failure and the effects of medication on the heart
Central Venous Catheters
Facilitate administration of chemotherapy, drug therapy, blood transfusions
-Non-tunneled Catheters
-Tunneled Catheters
-Implanted Ports
CVC
-CVC placement is verified with a PCXR
-Tip should be in the Superior Vena Cava (SVC) near right atrium
Chest Tube
Used to remove air or fluid that has accumulated in the pleural space
Nasogastric (NG) Feeding Tubes
Inserted for feeding, decompression, radiographic exam, medication administration
Tip advanced into small intestine
Used in absence of peristalsis, delayed gastric emptying, gastric resection
-Examples:
-Miller Abbott
-Harris
-Cantor
Endotracheal Tubes
Passed through mouth and inserted into trachea for connection to ventilator
*Never turn off a ventilator!
• Careful when positioning so you don’t accidentally disconnect tubing.
• Watch patient’s chest rise when making exposure.
Pacemakers/ICDs
Provides low levels of electrical stimulation to the heart muscles
• 2 View CXR will be requested to check lead placement
• Don’t raise left arm to prevent dislodging pacemaker (first 24 hrs after placement)
Proper OR Attire
-Change into “Scrub clothes” at facility
-Non sterile Shirt
-Non sterile Pants
-Mask
-Hat or hood
-Shoe covers
Surgical Team
Sterile Members:
-Surgeon
-Assistant to the surgeon
-Scrub person (Surg tech)
Non Sterile Members:
-Anesthesiologist
-Circulating nurse
-Various technologists
Radiographers responsibilities while in the OR
• Do not contaminate sterile field!
• Do not walk through sterile corridor (area between drape over patient and the instrument table).
• Pass behind rather than in front of sterile personnel to avoid contamination.
Port-A-Cath
-implanted device used for longterm and gives access to the veins
-places below the clavicle
-used for patients who need intermittent infusion of medication or chemotherapy, blood transfusions, etc
PICC line
-Catheter used to administer medication and fluids and to draw blood
-Can be used for short or long term therapy
