first-degree burn

second-degree burn
Effects the epidermis, and dermis, causes swelling, and red, white, or splotchy skin. Blisters may develop and pain can be severe. Can lead to scarring.
third-degree burn
Effects all three layers of the skin, epidermis, dermis, and hypo dermis. Skin appears stiff, waxy white, leather, or tan. Usually requires a skin graft.
fourth-degree burn
Highest level of burns, affects all layers of skin, muscle, tendons, and bones.
