Unit 4 Botany (plant Reproduction) Flashcards
Pistil
Female plant reproductive organ.
Style
Neck stem thingy that holds up the stigma. Part of the pistil. Pollen organ grows down it.
Ovary
Female reproductive organ, contains the ovules. This is the part that the pollen tube grows into.
Stigma
“Sticky stigma”, rest on top of the style, part of the pistil, is the part that the pollen grain attaches on to.
Stamen
Male reproductive organ, includes the anther and the filament.
Filament
Part of the stamen, holds up the anther.
Anther
Part of the stamen, supported by the filament, is the male part that produces the pollen which brings sperm to the female flower. Contains four pollen sacs that contain microsporocytes.
Pollen grain/microgamytophyte
The haploid stage of the pollen grain that has two nucleuses. One is the generative nucleus, the other the tube nucleus.
Germination
The term used for when the seedling grows from the seed case but ALSO when the pollen grain sprouts a pollen tube.
Generative cell
Goes through mitosis and makes the two sperm cells that will go down the pollen tube and mingle with the egg and the polar cells.
Tube cell
Creates the pollen tube, which is the red carpet for the sperm cells. Leads them to their sexy cell ladies inside the ovule.
Ovule
Contains all the cell mingling stuff. Is the home of the MEGASPORANGIUM, and the MEGASPOROCYTE.
Megasporocyte
The single diploid cell that rises from the megasporangium inside each ovule. Goes through mitosis and creates four megaspores.
Megaspores
Four are created by the megasporocyte, yet only one survives and the other three die. The survivor is super large and becomes the megagametophyte.
Megagametophyte
Formed by the large megaspores going through mitosis (but not cytokinesis) to get 8 nuclei. The nuclei divide into two groups of four, one on either end.
