Unit 3.3: Photosynthesis Flashcards
Where does photosynthesis take place in plant cells?
The chloroplasts
What’s the word equation of photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + Water –light energy and chlorophyll–> Glucose + Oxygen
What are the 2 stages of photosynthesis?
Stage 1: Light dependent stage
Stage 2: Carbon fixation
What is the purpose of chlorophyll?
To trap light energy from the sun in the light reaction
Describe the energy conversion that occurs during the light reaction.
The light energy is converted from light energy to chemical energy
Name the substance that is generated from the chemical energy.
ATP
Describe what happens to water during the light reaction.
It splits into hydrogen and oxygen
Describe the fate of the oxygen.
It gets diffuses out of the cell
Describe what happens to the H2 and ATP.
They go to stage 2
How is carbon fixation controlled?
By enzymes
What happens during carbon fixation?
H2 and CO2 get joined together using ATP to produce glucose (sugar)
State the 3 fates of the chemical energy in sugar.
Gets stored as starch
Is used for respiration
Gets converted into cellulose
What is the function of starch in a plant cell?
A storage carbohydrate
What is used to test for starch?
Iodine
State the function of cellulose in a plant cell.
For structure in a cell wall
