Unit 2.2: Control and Communication Flashcards
What is the function of the nervous system?
To transmit messages in from electrical impulses around the body
What are the two parts of the nervous system?
Central nervous system (CNS)
Nerves (neurons)
what does the CNS consist of?
Brain
spinal cord
What are the names of your brain called?
Cerebrum
Cerebellum
Medulla
What is the function of the cerebrum?
Memory
personality
concious thought
What is the function of the cerebellum?
Muscle
Balance
What is the function of the medulla?
Heart rate
breathing
What are the 3 types of neuron?
Inter
Sensory
Motor
How are messages carried along neurons?
Electrical impulse
What is the function of the Sensory neuron?
To pick up information from receptors
What is the function of the interneuron?
To process the information from the sensory to pass it to the motor neuron
What is the function of the motor neuron?
To act on the information given in an effe tor for a response
Describe the synapse.
The gap between neurons
Explain how messages travel between neurons.
When an electrical impulse reaches the end of a neuron chemicals are released from it.
The chemicals diffuse across the synapse and trigger an electrical impulse in the next neuron in the circuit.
Describe the speed if the effector is a muscle.
It will be rapid
