Unit 3- The Electrochemical Series Flashcards
How can electricity be produced in a cell?
By connecting 2 different metals in the solutions of their metal ions
OR
When at least one of the half cells does not involve metal atoms
What is a displacement reaction?
When electrons flow from the metal higher in the electrochemical series to the ions of the metal lower on the electrochemical series
When do displacement reactions occur in electrolysis?
When a metal is added to a solution containing ions of a metal lower in the electrochemical series
How can the position of hydrogen be established?
The reaction of metals with acids
Where do the electrons flow from and to in the external circuit?
From the species higher in the electrochemical series to the one lower in the electrochemical series
What is the purpose of an ion bridge?
To allow movement of ions to complete the circuit
