Unit 2- Carbohydrates Flashcards
What are carbohydrates?
Compounds made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
Why are carbohydrates needed in the body?
They supply the body with energy
What is the ratio if hydrogen to oxygen in carbohydrates?
2moles of hydrogen to 1mole of oxygen
What 2 groups can carbohydrates be split into?
Sugars(small molecules)
Starches(very long molecules)
Give 4 examples of sugars
Glucose
Fructose
Maltose
Sucrose
How can sugars be detected?
By using Benedict’s solution
What sugar doesn’t give a positive test for Benedict’s solution?
Sucrose
Does starch give a positive Benedict’s test?
No
How can starch be identified?
Gives a positive test for iodine solution
What is starch?
A natural condensation polymer made of many glucose molecules linked together
What is starch often called?
Polysaccharide
What do plants convert glucose into and why?
Starch for storing energy
What happens to starch during digestion?
It is hydrolysed to glucose which is carried by the blood stream to body cells
What can the hydrolysis of starch be catalysed by?
Acid and enzymes
What temperature do body enzymes work best at?
37°C
