Unit 1-Compounds And Mixtures Flashcards
What does “-ite” and “-ate” imply at the end of a compound?
The compound contains three elements one of which is oxygen
What does “-ide” imply at the ending of a compound?
That it has the two elements indicated by the name
How are compounds formed?
When elements react together
How can chemical reactions be identified?
- changes in appearance
- colour change
- effervescence (gas evolving)
- precipitate formed (solid)
What do all chemical reactions form?
One or more new substances
Name a way that chemical reactions can be identified
An energy change
What is an EXOTHERMIC reaction?
A reaction that releases energy to the surroundings and the products have less chemical energy than the reactants
(Gives off heat)
What is an ENDOTHERMIC reaction?
It takes in energy from the surroundings the products have more chemical energy than the reactants
How do mixtures occur?
When two or more substances come together with out reacting
They can be separated
Is air a mixture or a compound?
Mixture
What is the test for oxygen?
If oxygen is present it will relight a glowing splint
Is there enough oxygen in the air for the oxygen test to be positive?
No
What is a solution?
A solution is a mixture formed when a SOLUTE dissolves in a SOLVENT
What is a substance that dissolves in a liquid called?
Soluble
What does insoluble mean?
It is a substance that doesn’t dissolve
