Unit 2- Cracking Flashcards
0
Q
What is cracking?
A
The industrial method of changing long chain hydrocarbons into a mixture of smaller more useful molecules some of which are unsaturated
1
Q
What is the problem with factional distillation?
A
The crude oil yields more long chain hydrocarbons than are useful for present day industrial purposes
2
Q
What is the advantage of having a catalyst other than that it speeds up the rate of a reaction?
A
It allow the reaction to take place at a lower temperature
3
Q
Where can cracking be carried out?
A
In a laboratory
4
Q
What catalysts are used in cracking?
A
Aluminium oxide or silicate catalyst
