Unit 1-Factors Affecting Rate Flashcards
Before any chemical relation can happen what two thins must happen?
- the particles must collide
- the colliding particles must have enough energy to react
How are the rates if chemical reactions affected?
Name three
Changes in…
- concentration
- particle size
- temperature
- adding a catalyst
What is activation energy?
The minimum energy that colliding particles require for a reaction to occur
What two things that need to happen if the rate of reaction increases?
- increase the number of collisions
- give the colliding particles the required activation energy
How do you increase the reaction rate of a solid?
Cut it onto smaller pieces so the particle size is smaller which means more particles and more collisions can take place
What happens when you increase te concentration of the reactant?
There is an increase in number of particles so more collisions can take place
What happens when you increase the temperature?
- the particles move faster and collide more
- more of the colliding particles have the required activation energy
