Unit 2- Fuels: Combustion Flashcards
What is combustion?
Another word for burning
What is a fuel?
A chemical which is burned to produce energy
What happens when a substance burns?
It reacts with oxygen
What mainly makes up oil and natural gases?
Chemical compounds called hydrocarbons
What are hydrocarbons made of?
Hydrogen and carbon only
What conditions do hydrocarbons burn?
When there is a plentiful supply of oxygen
What do hydrocarbon produce when they burn?
Carbon dioxide and water
What is the test for carbon dioxide?
It turns limewater from colourless to milky
What happens when a hydrocarbon burns in an insufficient supply of oxygen?
Poisonous carbon monoxide gas and carbon soot is formed
What are nitrogen oxides?
Poisonous gases
How are nitrogen oxides formed?
When nitrogen and oxygen from the air react inside a petrol engine
How is sulphur dioxide formed?
When some fuels containing traces of sulphur burn
What is sulphur dioxide?
A poisonous gas which is released into the atmosphere
How are soot particles formed?
In he incomplete combustion of diesel
Is soot harmful?
Yes
