UNIT 3 STOCK FORMS Flashcards
What are performance characteristics of wood?
Performance characteristics describe how a material behaves in different contexts and what it looks like.
What do performance characteristics include?
Grain pattern and direction
surface defects
warpage, shrinkage, and splitting
Joining, forming, steam bending, laminating
Machining qualities
Resistance to decay and moisture
Toxicity
How does wood grain affect timber properties?
Wood grain can affect timber’s machining and costs.
Hardwoods have decorative grain.
Grain direction influences the wood’s strength
Wood will split in the direction of the rays
Planing along the grain avoids tearing the wood
What is anisotropic material?
An anisotropic material has different physical properties in different directions
Examples of an anisotropic material:
Natural wood due to its grain structure.
It is stronger along the grain than across it
Manufactured boards like MDF and plywood and not anisotropic.
