UNIT 3 L2: PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS Flashcards
What is the definition of performance characteristics?
Describes how a material behaves in different contexts and what it looks like.
What do performance characteristics include?
- Grain pattern and direction
- Surface defects
- Warpage
- Shrinkage
- Splitting
- Joining
- Forming
- Machine quality
- Resistance to decay
- Moisture resistant
- Toxicity
- Steam bending
How can the wood grain affect timbers?
Affect timbers machining and cost
What are wood fibres made from?
Hollow straw-like cells which carry water and nutrients to and from the roots and leaves, making the wood strong along its length
How do you identify the direction of the wood grain?
- Looking for the ray (small cells) rising to the surface of the wood or through touch, wood will always split in the direction of the rays
what is an anisotropic material?
has properties that differ according to the direction of measurement.
what timbers are not anisotropic?
Manufactured boards like MDF and Plywood
what does hygroscopic?
means it behaves like a sponge - absorbs moisture and swells up in damp conditions. e.g. wood
