Unit 3 Lecture 20 Topic 3 Flashcards

1
Q

What are non-woven fabric performance properties controlled by?

A

The arrangement of the fibres (oriented, cross-laid, random), the properties of fibres used (fibre content), and how the fibres are held together (physical, heat, adhesive, stitching) all effect the performance properties.

Q

What is the durability of non-woven fabrics like?

A

They have generally high strength because of fibre entanglement and adhesion, along with the inherent strength of the fibres in the web. Webs composed of coarser & higher strength fibres will be stronger because the greater number of bonding points increases strength.

Q

What is the appearance of non-woven fabrics like?

A

Non-women’s are very different in appearance from knitted or
woven fabrics. In fact, they more closely resemble paper than fabric. If used in clothing (e.g. interfacings), they are often covered. Many applications are industrial where appearance less
important.

Q

What is the comfort of non-woven fabrics like?

A

Non-woven’s have poor draping characteristics, limited flexibility and little or no stretch making them an unsuitable for most garment applications. They can be thick, lofty, and well insulating, useful for boot liners, quilt batting, and insulation for jackets.
