Unit 3 Lecture 20 Topic 1 Flashcards
What defines a non-woven fabric?
Non-woven fabrics are made directly from fibres. They have a web structure to lower costs– sometimes half the cost of woven fabrics. Non-woven fabrics are used in technical, apparel, and interior items.
How are non-woven fabrics classified?
Non-woven fabrics may be classified as durable products (multiple use) or disposable products (single use).
Durable: e.g. blankets, carpet backings, interfacings for apparel
Disposable: e.g. wipes, disposable diapers, hygiene products, packaging.
Oriented Fibre Webs:
Fibres lie mostly in the lengthwise direction of fabric and strength is greater in the direction of orientation.
Cross-laid Fibre Webs:
Fibres are oriented lengthwise then crosswise in the next layer to help create strength in both directions.
Random Fibre Webs:
Fibres lie in all directions within the web and strength is uniform in all directions.
