Mental Health
A state of emotional and social wellbeing in which individuals can realise their own abilities, cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively and contribute to their community – exists on a continuum
Mental Illness
A mental illness is one that affects one or more functions of the mind.
Types of Mental Illnesses
Psychotic and Neurotic
Psychotic Illnesses
Refers to situations where someone loses contact with reality (i.e. schizophrenia, episodes, hallucinations)
Neurotic Illnesses
Where people struggle with feelings, thoughts and emotions but their sense of reality remains (i.e. depression, anxiety, personality disorders)

Made by WHO - includes physical and wide range of other illnesses - identifies disorder but not cause or treatment
Psychological Disorders
A dysfunction which affects the everyday functioning of a person and impairs their mood, behaviour or cognition.
Types of Disorders
Mood, Personality, Psychotic, Anxiety
Mood Disorders
Involves persistent feelings of sadness, feeling overly happy or fluctuations between the extremes
Personality Disorders
An individual shows consistent, rigid, unhealthy patterns of thinking and functioning
Psychotic Disorders
Abnormal thinking and behaviour - individuals are unable to distinguish imaginary and reality
Anxiety Disorders
Too much or too little anxiety can be harmful - frequency and intensity of anxiety is disproportionate to the situation and interferes with normal behaviour
