Normal Behaviour
Behaviour accepted by society and is typical for that specific situation or context - should allow the person to function independently
Adaptive Behaviours
Using learned knowledge and strategies to adapt to different situations positively (i.e. meditating, exercising)
Maladaptive behaviours
Learned behaviours and adaptations that are dysfunctional and prevent normal behaviour (i.e. self-harm, substance abuse, agressive behaviour)
Situational Approach
What is considered normal behaviour is determined by situational cues
Sociocultural Approach
Determines what is normal through societal and cultural norms
Historical Approach
What is considered normal is based on the different time periods
Statistical Approach
Identifies normal behaviour by the frequency of the behaviour in a population
Functional Approach
Behaviour is considered normal if individual is able to lead a functional life
Medical Approach
Appoach views abnormality as a diognosable mental disorder
