Unit 1 - Brain (Brain Anatomy & Functions) Flashcards
3 Main Sections of Brain
Forebrain, Midbrain, Hindbrain
Forebrain Parts
Cerebrum, Thalamus, Hypothalamus
Forebrain Functions
Responsible for thinking, sensing, memory and emotions.
Midbrain Functions
Sleep Regulation, motor movement, arousal
Hindbrain Parts
Medulla, Pons, Cerebellum
Medulla Functions (Hindbrain)
Involuntary Life-Giving Processes (breathing, heartbeat, digestion)
Pons Functions (Hindbrain)
Controls eye and body movements
Cerebellum Functions (Hindbrain)
Motor memory (i.e. bike riding, typing) and maintaining balance
Wernicke’s Area
Responsible for speech comprehension
Damage to Wernicke’s Area (Wernicke’s Aphasia)
A person may be able to speak in phrases that sound fluent yet lack meaning
Broca’s Area
Responsible for speech production
Damage to Broca’s Area (Broca’s Aphasia)
A person may not be able to articulate and form full and grammatical sentences
Geschwind’s Territory
Connects Wernicke’s and Broca’s Areas - enables brain to interpret and classify things
