Pushes and Pulls
Pushes- factors that cause people to leave their home
Pulls- factors that attract people to one place rather than others
Bridges and Barriers
Bridges- help people migrate; make it easier
Barriers- make it harder for people to move ex:lack of money, borders
Chain Migration
The movement of people who have the support of family/friends who have already immigrated. Ex: translations, money, moral can be a bridge
Migration
Movement of people from one place to another
Remittances
Those who have migrated somewhere else will send money to those in their origin country. Ex: Tonga 60% income comes from remittance
Types of immigrants
Labor immigrants, professional immigrants, entrepreneurial immigrants, refugees, internally displaced persons
Labor immigrant
Workers/manular labor. Usually dont have a high level of education or professional skills.
Professional immigrants
Ex:doctors, business executives. Have high level of education or professional skill seeking better opportunities.
Entrepreneurial immigrants
Ex:shopkeeper/merchants. Those who are in between some education and skill
Refugees
Typically forced to leave their home due to violence in home country. Fleeing their country and in need of protection due to persecution war or other dangerous conflict or disruption of order.
Migration trends
Globalization diversification (variety of people), acceleration (more people faster), feminization (more women)
Holmes
Not clear between voluntary (typically manual labor) and involuntary (refugees). Argues against individual choice and to focus on structural force and big picture impacts.
