Enculturation
Process of learning a culture
Margaret Mead
American anthropologist. Wrote age in Samoa. Studied character development (parents and children), enculturation (seen in 2 year old bathing the baby), sexuality, and stereotypes. “Public Anthropologist” culture and personality historical particularism
Socialization
Another form of enculturation focusing on culture via practices and social interactions. Can be formal (classroom) or informal (observing behaviors)
Mental Maps
Remembering things in correlation with others.
Ways of classifying the world around you and assigning meaning to those categories.
Norms
Ideas or rules about how people should behave
Values
Fundamental beliefs about what makes a good life.
Beliefs
Things we think are true with a lack of evidence/proof.
Symbols
Object or event that is intrinsically unrelated to another thing or event to which it refers. Ex: 13 stripes represent 13 colonies

Formal learning of school. Apprenticeship is the middle group of formal and informal learning. 2 informal learning was through playing (testing out social roles and trying ideas without negative consequences) and observations (blacksmith located in the middle of the town).
