Anthropology founder. Culture is learned and taught shared among a group of people.

5 Characteristics of Culture
Learned, shared, based on symbols(language), is patterned/integrated(parts reflect other aspects), usually adaptive/dynamic/changing
Naive realism
The idea that reality is the same for people everywhere.
Bohannan
Shakespeare in the bush example of naive realism.
Tells the story of hamlet.
Their culture: ghost =bad omen or witchcraft. Multiple wives is accepted. Rude to speak against elders. Late husbands family was expected to keep the women in the family.
Bohannan Culture: Ghost. One Wife. Speak against anyone doing wrong. Taboo to marry your brother’s wife.
Ethnocentrism
A belief or feeling that one’s own way of life is desirable and actually superior to others. Personal biases

Body Ritual among the Nacirema.
Article is a satire referencing american culture in 1950. Nacirema is America spelled backwards. Purpose is to make the familiar strange. Lesson of cautioning against ethnocentrism everyone’s culture will be strange at first.
