A case study of a culture or microculture based on fieldwork using participant observation. Refers to both the process (research) and the product (write up)
Fieldwork
Data for ethnography. A social science and art by collecting data, talking to people and writing up findings interestingly.

Relied on others reports and observations. Lack fieldwork. E.B tylor
Franz Boas 1858-1942
Holistic view, 4 fields, in person data collection, salvage ethnography (documenting disappearing cultures), cultural relativism (avoid biases), used historical particularism (culture develop based on unique histories).
Participant Observation
Learning about culture by living in a given culture for an extended period of time. Bronislaw Malinowski: father of fieldwork
key elements: live with people, participate in daily lives, learn language (some things don’t translate), good listener
Evans Pritchard
Studied Nuer in Sudan through structural functionalism focusing on their institutions. Focused on one moment of time did not compare to past.
Holmes/Multi-sited fieldwork
Followed migrants one group of people who moved to different locations.
Barbara Myerhoff
Anthropology from home. Wrote number our days talked to people in senior citizen community.
