Unit 1: Module 3.2 Globalization Flashcards
Globalization
World wide connections and processes that reshape local conditions on an intensifying scale.
4 key dynamics of Globalization
Time Space Compression, Flexible Accumulation, Increasing Migration, and Uneven Development
Cultural diffusion
Cultural borrowing spread of ideas and objects
Cultural fusion
Cultural melding/combining of elements from different cultures
Cultural Hybridization
The process by which a cultural custom is transformed to fit the cultural context.
Tomlinson
Globalization is not a steamroller. Doesn’t destroy local cultures but gives them the chance to mix with global influences. People take what they like from global culture, blend it with their own traditions, and create something new. Instead of losing their identity, they reshape it by combining local and global elements. An opportunity for change than a threat to culture.
World Systems
Transnational connection that links nations and people together economically: world markets model, unequal distribution of resources.
Immanuel Wallerstein
Time space compression
Movement of people and ideas across places. Move faster because of how connected cultures are.
Flexible Accumulation
Way that companies save money and maximize profit by finding low cost solutions on global scales; offshoring and outsourcing.
Increasing Migration
People are able to move around easier, faster and more frequently
Uneven Development
Uneven distribution of resources around the world.
