Unit 2 Lesson 3 Flashcards
Asexual reproduction
One organism produces 1 or more organisms that are genetically identical to itself.
The new organisms live independently of the original organism
Types of Asexual reproduction
A. Binary Fission - happens in prokaryotes. The parent organism splits in 2
B. Budding - happens in eukaryotes. A bud grows until it forms a full size organism. Result of mitosis
C. Spores - both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Specialized cells that are light and can be carried by wind
D. Vegetative Reproduction - where new plants can grow from stems, roots or leaves
Sexual Reproduction
Each parent contributes a sex cell to the new organism. 1/2 the genes in the offspring come from each parent
Fertilization
When a sperm cell and egg cell combine to form a new cell
Zygote
The new cell formed when the egg cell and sperm combine
Advantages of Asexual Reproduction
- Happens very quickly
- Offspring are identical to parent so good traits are passed on
- Organisms don’t need a partner
- All organisms can produce more offspring not just females
Advantages of Sexual Reproduction
- It increases genetic variation which increases the chances of survival
