Unit 1 - Lesson 3 Flashcards
Cytoskeleton
Is a network of protein filaments that give shape and support to cells
Also helps with cell division and movement
Mitochondrion
Cellular respiration
The organelle where cellular respiration occurs. Called the “powerhouse of the cell”
The process where cells use oxygen to release energy stored in food
Ribosome
Is the organelle that makes proteins by putting together chains of amino acids using instructions encoded in the cell’s DNA
Endoplasmic reticulum
A system of membranes near the nucleus . Can be rough (has ribosomes) or smooth ( no ribosomes)
Helps in the production, processing, and transport of proteins and in the production of lipids
Golgi Complex
The membrane-bound organelle that packages and distributes materials, such as proteins
Cell wall
is a rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane in plant cells
Provide support and protection to the cell
Vacuole
A fluid-filled vesicle found in the cells of most animals, plants, and fungi
Plant cells have a large central vacuole that stores water and supports the cell
Chloroplasts
Organelles where photosynthesis occurs
Chloroplasts are green because they contain chlorophyll.
Chlorophyll absorbs the energy in sunlight to make sugar
Lysosomes
Organelles which contain digestive enzymes, which break down old organelles, waste and foreign substances in the cell
Nucleus
The organelle that contains the genetic material (DNA) of the cell
