Unit 1 Lesson 1 Flashcards
Cell
The smallest functional and structural unit of all living organisms
Organism
Any living thing
The Cell Theory
Gives 3 basic characteristics of all cells and organisms
*All organisms are made up of 1 or more cells
*The cell is the basic unit of all organisms
*All cells come from existing cells
Cell membrane
Protective layer that covers a cell’s surface and acts as a barrier between the inside of the cell and the cell’s environment
Cytoplasm
The region enclosed by the cell membrane that includes the fluid and all of the organelles
Organelle
A small body in a cell’s cytoplasm that is specialized to perform a specific function. Most have a membrane around them
Nucleus
A membrane- bound organelle that contains the DNA of the cell
Prokaryote
A single-celled organism that does not have a nucleus or membrane-bound organelles
Its DNA is located in the cytoplasm.
Has organelles called ribosomes that do not have a membrane
Are smaller than eukaryotes
Example: bacteria
Eukaryote
An organism made up of cells that have their DNA in a nucleus
Contain membrane-bound organelles and ribosomes
Examples: plants, animals fungi
