Unit 2 Lesson 1 Flashcards
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid is the genetic material in cells. Contains instructions for growth, developments and activities. Contains the information that determines an organism’s traits
Chromosome
One of the structures in the nucleus made of DNA and protein . Consists of 2 identical structures called chromatids held together by a centromere
Cell cycle
The life cycle of a eukaryotic cell.
Divided into 3 stages: interphase, mitosis , and cytokinesis
Interphase
The part of the cell cycle where the cell is not dividing. The cell grows and produces organelles and carries out other normal life activities
** The DNA is duplicated during this stage
Mitosis
The part of the cell cycle during which the nucleus divides into 2 identical nuclei
Chromosomes condense from chromatin
Cytokinesis
The stage when the cytoplasm divides . Begins during the last step of mitosis
In plant cells which have a cell wall, a cell plate forms. The cell plate becomes cell membranes
What are the phases of mitosis?
Prophase - the chromatin in the nucleus condenses and becomes visible under the microscope
Metaphase - chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
Anaphase - the chromatids separate and are pulled to the opposite sides of the cell
Telophase - a new nuclear membrane forms around each group of chromosomes
