Unit 1 Lesson 5 Flashcards
Homeostasis
Is the maintenance of a constant internal state in a changing environment
The cell must:
Obtain and use energy
Make new cells
Exchange materials
Eliminate waste
Photosynthesis
The process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to make sugar and oxygen
Water + CO2 + sunlight ……………. Sugar + O2
Cellular respiration
The process where cells use oxygen to produce energy from food
Sugar + O2. …………. Water + CO2 + energy
Mitosis
The process of cell division that forms two new nuclei
Passive transport
The movement of particles across a cell membrane without using energy
Diffusion
The movement of molecules from high concentration to low concentration
Osmosis
The diffusion of water through a semi-permeable membrane
Active transport
The movement of particles across a cell membrane using energy . Particles go from low concentration to higher concentration
Endocytosis
The process where a cell membrane surrounds a particle and encloses the particle in a vesicle to bring the particle into the cell
Vesicles - sacs formed from pieces of the cell membrane
Exocytosis
When particles are enclosed in a vesicle and released from the cell
Transport Systems
Cardiovascular system - the main transport system in humans. Includes heart, blood vessels, blood
Xylem - tissue in plants that transports water and minerals
Phloem - tissue in plants that transports food made in plant cells
