REM Sleep
A Stage of sleep characterized by rapid eye movements, a high level of brain activity, a deep relaxation of the muscles, and dreaming
Consciousness
A state of awareness, including a persons feelings, sensations, ideas, and perception
Insomnia
The failure to get enough sleep at night in order to feel rested the next day
Sleep apnea
A sleep disorder in which a person has trouble breathing while asleep
Narcolepsy
A condition characterized by suddenly falling asleep or feeling very sleepy during the day
Nightmares

Sleep disruptions that occur during stage IV of sleep, involving screaming,panic,or confusion
Sleepwalking
Walking or carrying out behaviors while asleep
The part of the nervous system that consists of the brain and spinal cord.
Central Nervous System (CNS)
The bundle of nerves within the spine that runs down the length of the back and transmits most messages back and forth between the body and brain.
Spinal Cord
A network of nerves branching out from the spinal cord that conduct information from the bodily organs to the central nervous system and take information back to the organs.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
The long, thin cells that constitute the structural and functional unit of nerve tissue along which messages travel to and from the brain.
Neurons
The gap that exists between the axon terminals of the sending neuron and the dendrites of the receiving neuron.
Synapse
The chemicals released by neurons, which determine the rate at which other neurons fire.
Neurotransmitter
The division of the peripheral nervous system that controls voluntary movement of skeletal muscles.
Somatic Nervous System (SNS)
The portion of the peripheral nervous system that controls internal biological functions such as heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure.
Automatic Nervous System (ANS)
A form of altered consciousness in which people become highly susceptible to change in thought and behavior
Hypnosis
Hypnotist can suggest things that the participant can remember or forget when the trance is over
Posthypnotic suggestion
A technique in which the person learns his or her psychological process
Biofeedback
When a person focuses on an image or thought to achieve a clear mind and relaxation
Meditation
interacts with the central nervous system to alert a persons mood, perception and behavior
Psychoactive drugs
dried leaves and flowers of India hemp that produce an altered state of consciousness when smoked or ingested
Marijuana
