Unit 1: Stages of Play Flashcards
What do infants do during ‘Solo (solitary) Play’ (0-2yrs)?
They play independently.
They have limited social, cognitive and physical skills at this stage.
They can explore their environment at their own pace.
This helps them to focus and become self-reliant.
What do infants do during ‘Parallel Play’?
They play alongside other children.
They do not share or take turns.
They have little interaction as they are engrossed in their own activity.
They show interest in what others are doing.
What do infants do during ‘Co-operative Play’ (3-8yrs)?
They’re able to form relationships with others (and language development helps this).
They’re able to play together, with other children, sharing toys and taking turns.
This is the stage of creating a ‘best friend’.
What do infants do during ‘Associative Play’ (3-4yrs)?
They’re able to play co-operatively with other children, however they’re egocentric.
They develop reasoning skills by asking questions.
