What are ‘Gross Motor Skills’?
Gross motor skills include larger movement (mobility) requiring a larger (or large) muscles.
What are ‘Fine Motor Skills’?
Fine motor skills are smaller movement that require more precise direction and co-ordination. They also use smaller muscles.
Fine Motor Skills: What do Children develop at age 3?
Ability to fold paper in half.
Ability to draw shapes after given an example demonstration.
Ability to button and unbutton clothing.
Can hold crayon steadily.
Can turn pages.
Fine Motor Skills: What do Children develop at age 4?
Can use fork correctly.
Can touch the tip of each finger to the thumb.
Can get dressed and undressed without assistance.
Fine Motor Skills: What do Children develop at age 5?
Can cut out a circle.
Can copy shapes.
Can grasp pencil correctly.
Ability to tie shoelace.
Fine Motor Skills: What do Children develop at age 6?
Ability to cut accurately with scissors.
Can use a knife to cut food.
Can complete a 16-20 jigsaw puzzle.
Can build small structure(s) with blocks.

Has fully developed hand-eye coordination.
Has the ability to draw complex shapes.
Can write their full name.
Can write short stories on lines of paper.

Can cut confidently and accurately with scissors.
Gross Motor Skills: What do Children develop at age 3?
Ability to ride tricycle using pedals unassisted by parents.
Able to run without falling.
Able to throw ball to an adult, roughly 5 feet from them.
Gross Motor Skills: What do Children develop at age 4?
Able to catch a ball with arms and body.
Able to run smoothly, and can alternate speeds.
Able to walk upstairs alternating feet.
Gross Motor Skills: What do Children develop at age 5?
Is able to hop on one foot.
Can catch a ball with two hands.
Can perform jumping jacks.
Can walk up and down the stairs whilst carrying objects.
Gross Motor Skills: What do Children develop at age 6?
Able to kick a rolling ball.
Can jump over objects 10 inches high.
Can ride a bicycle with stabilisers.
Able to throw accurately.
Gross Motor Skills: What do Children develop at age 7?
Able to ride bicycle with confidence.
Can jump with confidence.
Can run in co-ordination (no failure).
Gross Motor Skills: What do Children develop at age 8?
Can hop on both legs.
Can run in a straight line.
