Unit 1: Chi-Squared and Aninmal Beahavior Flashcards
Proximate cause
What is happening
Fixed action pattern
An unchangeable sequence of events that an animal must do to completion
Innate behavior
Something that an animal inherently knows how to do
Altruism
Lessens individuals safety to increase someone else’s
Ultimate cause
Why something happens
Sign stimuli
The stimulus that initiates the fixed action pattern
Classical conditioning
A neutral stimuli mixed with a positive stimuli produces a response
Ex. A man walks in to the din to feed his fish, he notices that the fish start to go to the top of the tank when he enters
Learned behavior
Changes based on environment
Kin selection
Putting yourself in danger to save kin to let your genes be passed on
Operant conditioning
Trial and error, something happens in direct correlation to their actions
Taxis
Change in direction towards(positive) or away from(negative) stimuli
Kinesis
Change in rate of movement due to stimulus
Ex. Fish swimming in opposition to current to catch food more easily
Chemotaxis
Taxis but the stimuli is chemical
