Unit 1 Flashcards
hypothesis + 3 requirements
a proposed explanation for a phenomenon; MUST be testable, falsifiable, and have a mechanism (some explanation)
prediction
if…then… statement used to test a hypothesis
IV
variables whose values are changed, x-axis
DV
variable which responds to IV, y-axis
control group
samples that do not get any experimental treatment
inherent behavior
simple reflexes, fixed-action pattern (remove stimulus, it continues!!), imprinting (animal quickly learns to recognize individual)
learned behavior
habituation (snail poking, spider poking…), conditioning
conditioning
classical: associating new stimulus with known stimulus (Pavlov’s dog)
operant (trial-and-error): establishment of behavior because of associated stimulus
circadian rhythms
internal clock – behaviors operating on a cycle
ODWD
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek – first to see unicellular things 1674!!
Robert Hooke – coined “cell” term 1665
