Unit 1 Flashcards
Radiography
use of gamma rays, radio waves, high frequency sound waves, and/or radioactive substances
Who discovered X rays ?
Wilhem Conrad Roentgen
When did Wilhelm discover the x-ray?
November 8, 1895
What was the first x-ray published ?
Wilhelm’s wife’s left hand
Who was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize in Physics?
Marie Curie (died July 4, 1934)
Who invented the tube for the x-ray in the 1870s
William Crooke
What is a radiologic technologist?
R.T. (R) (ARRT); certified person to use radiation and/or radioactive substances to produce images of the internal structures of the body for interpretation by a radiologist
What credentials are needed to be a radiologist technologist?
You need continuing qualification requirements (CQR) every 10 years and continuing education credits (CEC) every 2 years for 24 credits
what is a radiographer?
licensed person who takes the images and sets up body positions
what is a radiologist ?
the doctor who reads the images and diagnosis patients and treats injuries; certified by the American Board of Education
what is the schooling to be a radiologist?
bachelors, 4years in med school, 4 years in residency, and 1-2 years in fellowship
What is the ASRT?
American Society of Radiologic Technologists
What are practice standards?
define the practice of radiography and establish general criteria to determine compliance for those who work in imaging; important for our careers
What is the practice standards format?
intro, scope of practice, clinical performance standards, quality performance standards, professional performance standards, advisory opinion standards
what is ALARA?
as low as reasonably achievable
what is the ARRT ?
American Registry of Radiologic Technologists; boards that give credits, RA’s, MRI, CT,etc
what are the diagnostic radiography?
general diagnostic: 2d imaging
fluro- live imaging
portable: bedside
operating
trauma
What is computed tomography ?
(R) (CT)(ARRT)
discovered in 72’ and uses a gamtry camera (images in slices); creates detailed images of internal organs, bones, soft tissue and blood vessels
what is magnetic resonance imaging ?
(R)(MR)(ARRT)
discovered in 77’ and doesn’t use radiation at all but seen in slices
uses bore camera (large magnet)
image for non-bony parts or soft tissues of the body
what is advanced interventional radiography?
(AIR) uses fluro to watch vessels and treat condition and is a sterile technique
What are the two categories under AIR?
cardiac interventional radiography (R)(CI)(ARRT)
vascular interventional radiography (R)(VI)(ARRT)
what is mammography?
(R)(M)(ARRT)
examination of the breast around age 40 unless there is family history; detects minuit cancer; uses tomosynthesis- slices, 3D
what is bone densitometry?
DEXA- another word for bone density & stands for dual energy x-ray absorpitometry
looks for osteoporosis
what is diagnostic medical sonography ?
(R)(S)(ARRT) or (VS) or (BS)
images from the uses high frequency sound waves, no radiation and live
certified through ARDMS or ARRT
what are some facts about ultrsounds?
the equipment is a computer (CPV) and transducers (each for something different); used for pregnancy, abdomen, and extremities or vascular (finds blood clots)
what is radiation therapy?
RT(T)(ARRT)
high radiation treatment that is used for cancer
the oncologist and the (T) work closely together
what is nuclear medicine?
RT(N)(ARRT)
use of radioactive material for diagnosis; uses gamma camera but the radiation comes from the patient; board is NMTCB
what is fusion therapy?
PET CT Or MRI
test to detect Alzheimer’s and test the heart
what is a nuclear medicine advanced associate?
a step below a physician and they are authorized to use radioactive materials to enhance patient care
need nuc med experience for two years min.
what is a radiologist assistant?
RT(R)(ARRT)
advanced level radiographer who extends the capacity of the radiologist; must be RT certified
cannot dictate and diagnose
staff technologist working in one or more settings; can pass or fail you; in department ?
mentor
school faculty in one on one classroom or clinical setting; professor; in department?
clinical preceptor
school faculty teaches in classroom only?
didactic faculty member
teaching responsibilities and administrative duties; makes clinical schedule; oversees clinicals ?
clinical coordinator
teaching but mainly admin; can teach but strictly in admin?
program director
what is administration?
clinical supervisor, management of modalities and directors; CRA not always needed
what is quality management ?
(R)(QM)(ARRT)
the technical end; data management of quality on the technical end; on the job or PACS
what is PACS?
picture achieving communication system; 1982 1st large scale system; where pictures are stored when taken; can be done at home
what is quality assurance vs control
QC-specific in equipment, safety, tested quarterly
QA- timeliness; patient satisfactions and care
what is industrial?
RDNS
takes x-rays of pipelines, castings, etc
