Chest anatomy Flashcards
thoracic cavity
contains lungs and heart, organs of the respiratory, cardiovascular and lymphatic system; inferior portion of esophagus
how many chambers are within the thoracic cavity
3; pericardial, right and left pleural cavities
chest anatomy
bony thorax: protective framework
respiratory system: lungs and airways
mediastinum: space between the lungs
where is the diaphragm
more part of the abdomen but below the lungs
bony thorax
Sternum: manubrium, body and xiphoid
clavicles: sternal end
scapulae
12 pairs of ribs
12 thoracic vertebrae: intervertebral foramina
Counting ribs
-always count on the left side
-live is on the right which pushes on the lungs
-10 ribs above diaphragm
respiratory system
exchange of gaseous substances between the air and blood
how many divisions in the respiratory system
pharynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs
Lungs
right lung: 3 lobes (superior, middle, inferior) and 2 fissures (horizontal and oblique)
left lung: 2 lobes and 1 fissure
apex: half inch above clavicle
hilum
at medial surface; where the primary bronchus, pulmonary artery & veins exit/enter lungs
pleural membrane
visceral pleura: attached to the surface of the lungs
parietal pleura: lines the thoracic cavity
pleural cavity: space between the two membranes filled with lubricating fluid
mediastinum
medial portion of the thoracic cavity between lungs
contains: heart and great vessels, trachea, esophagus, thymus gland, lymphatics, nerves
lung movement
when breathing in (inspiration) the diaphragm moves down
when breathing out (expiration) the diaphragm moves up
density and air in lungs
anything white shows density
anything black indicates air
body habitus of the lungs
Asthenic: longest mediastinum
hypersthenic: shortest mediastinum
sthenic: normal mediastinum
hyposthenic: long and big mediastinum
