U3 Key Area 1- Ecosystem Flashcards
Biodiversity
The variety and relative abundance of living organisms
Ecosystem
An ecosystem consist of all the organisms living in a particular area and the non-living parts with which the organisms interact
What is an ecosystem make up of? (2)
- Habitat
- Community
Habitat
A place where the organisms lives.
Population
The number of organisms of on species living in a particular habitat.
Community
All of the organisms (of different species) living in a particular habitat.
Species
A group of organisms that can interbred to produce fertile offspring
Niche
The role of an organism plays within a community
Food Chain
Energy relationships between organisms
Producer
Organisms capable of making its own food
Consumer
Organisms which obtains food by eating
What is a biotic factor?
A biotic factor is any living component that affects another organism and biodiversity
What is an abiotic factor?
An abiotic factor is any non-living component that affects an organism and biodiversity
Give examples of an abiotic factor? (3)
- pH
- temperature
- light intensity
Give examples of a biotic factor. (3)
- amount of grazing
- competition for food
- disease
Interspecific Competition
Interspecific Competition happens when members if a different species are competing for similar resource
Intraspecific Competition
Intraspecific competition occurs between members of the same species
What competition is most fierce
Intraspecific is more fierce than Interspecific as Intraspecific as the organisms will be competing for the same resources whereas Interspecific are not competing for the exact same resources.
