U2 Key Are 4- Variation and Inheritance Flashcards
Variation
The difference that exist between members of the same species
What are the two types of variation
- discrete
- continuous
What’s discrete variation
Where a characteristic falls into distinct groups
What are discrete characteristics controlled by
Single genes
What is continuous variation
Variation which can have a range of values between a minimum and a maximum
What are continuous characteristics
Polygenic which means they are controlled by many genes that act together
Inheritance
When a trait is passed on from one generation to the next
How many sets of chromosomes do gametes contain
One
How many sets of chromosomes do diploid cells contain
2 matching sets
Alleles
Different forms of the same cell
Genotype
Refers to the combination of alleles that an organism has
Phenotype
Refers to the physical characteristics of an organism
Dominant
Allele which even if only 1 is present is always expressed in a phenotype
Recessive
Allele which is only expressed if two of these alleles are present
Homozygous
Possessing two identical alleles of the gene
E.g. GG or gg
