U2 AOS 2 - Fallibility of Visual Perceptual Systems Flashcards
Visual illusions
created by a misinterpretation of the reality of a visual stimulus which means our perception of the stimulus is confused.
Muller-Lyer illusion
The Müller-Lyer illusion is the misinterpretation of lines of equal length due to different shaped ends. The feathertail ends are perceived to be further away longer and the arrowheads are perceived to be closer and shorter and this is due to convergence
Ames room illusion
the illusion occurs when a person views people in a room through a peephole using monocular depth cues and the room is perceived to be rectangular shaped but is actually a trapezoid shape. When the people move around the room they appear to be growing and shrinking and this occurs because we maintain shape constancy over size constancy.
Agnosia
A disorder involving the loss or impairment of the ability to recognise familiar stimuli through the use of one or more senses despite sense functioning normally otherwise. It mostly affects vision. This disorder is caused by damage to the regions of the brain responsible for object and facial recognition
