U2 AOS 2 - Attention Flashcards
Attention
the level of awareness directed towards certain stimuli to the exclusion of others
Internal Stimuli
which are information or sensations that originate from within the body. Eg. being hungry or tired, being hot or cold, having a headache
External Stimuli
which are information or sensations that originate from outside the body. Eg. conversations, tasks, something you are reading, the things you see, hear, smell, touch, or taste.
Sustained Attention
refers to focusing on one stimulus or task across a prolonged, continuous period of time. This is also known as ‘vigilance’. Eg. reading books, driving, competing a math problem
Divided Attention
refers to splitting attention
across two or more stimuli at one time. This type of attention involves multitasking and works well for completing simple tasks using an automatic cognitive processes. Eg. Exercising and listening to music
Selective Attention
involves focusing our concentration on one stimuli at the exclusion of other stimuli and is usually required when we complete a controlled cognitive process. E.g. learning to drive, shoot a goal, play the guitar
Controlled Cognitive Process
Involves a high level of awareness and mental effort
Automatic Cognitive Process
Involves a low level of awareness and mental effort
