U1 AOS 2 - Neuron Flashcards
Parts of a Neuron
dendrite, soma, myelin, axon, axon terminal, neurotransmitter, synapse
What is a neuron?
Cells that make up the brain and nervous system, which receives and transmits information
Dendrite function
receives information from other neurons, called pre-synaptic neurons
Soma function
contains genetic information, maintains the neuron’s structure, and provides energy to drive activities
Axon
transmits signals allowing the neuron to send information to multiple other cells
Myelin
allows electrical impulses to transmit quickly and efficiently along the nerve cells and helps to stop nerve signals from leaking out.
Axon terminals
stores and releases a chemical messages in the form of neurotransmitters.
Neurotransmitter
carry chemical signals (“messages”) from one neuron to the next target cell.
Synapse
one neuron sends a message to a target neuron (an other cell.)
neural transmission across the synapse
When an action potential reaches the presynaptic terminal, it causes neurotransmitter to be released from the neuron into the synaptic
