Types of tissues Flashcards
Study of an organism’s structure and body parts. The study of its form.
Anatomy
Study of how the organs work.
Physiology
Group of specialized cells that interact and function together. The best example is the lining of the stomach that secrete acid.
Tissues
Group of tissues that interact as a unit and function as one. The stomach consists of muscle, blood, and nerves which is all classified as tissues.
Organ
Group of organs that are physically or functionally joined. The human digestive system is composed of different organs.
Organ System.
The cells are embedded in a nonliving mixture of water, carbohydrates, lipids, and protein fibers such as collagen and elastin. Cells cannot survive without this.
Extracellular matrix
Type of tissue that coats the body’s internal and external surfaces with multiple layers of tightly packed cells. For protection, nutrient absorption along the intestinal tract, and gas diffusion in the alveoli in the lungs. This type of tissue also form the glands.
Epithelial tissues
Type of tissue that are embedded in the extracellular matrix. It fills spaces, attach epithelium tissue with one another, protect and cushion organs, and provide flexible and structural support. Bones, adipose fat, cartilage, and blood.
Connective tissue
Type of tissue that contracts when electrically stimulated that is caused by the abundance of mitochondria. The purpose is to move other tissues and organs. Skeletal muscles, cardiac muscle, smooth muscle.
Muscle tissue
Type of tissue that uses electrical signals and impulses to convey information rapidly. Consists of neurons and neuroglia.
Nervous Tissue
