Respiratory system Flashcards
The system that exchanges gases with the environment. The cell uses this system to generate ATP in aerobic respiration.
Respiratory System
The area of a body where external respiration occurs.
Respiratory surface
Forms the external entrance to the nasal cavity, functions as an entrance for breathing, immunity, and sensing of smell.
Nose
Also a part of the digestive system where inhaled air passes through.
Pharynx
Front of the pharynx. Produces voice by the propagating of vocal cords. Also, direct chewed food away from the respiratory system.
Larynx
Cartilage flap that covers the glottis so that no food can enter the lungs.
Epiglottis
Also known as the windpipe, is a tube beneath the larynx. C-shaped rings of cartilage hold it open even though the esophagus expands due to swallowing.
Trachea
Tubes that leads to each of the lungs. It branches repeatedly decreasing its diameter and thickness.
Bronchi
The finest brance of bronchi. It has no cartilage but with smooth muscles.
Bronchioles.
Ducts shaped like a grapes is where the gas exchange occurs. Tiny sac with wall of epithetial tissue that is one cell layer thick.
