Skeletal Systen Flashcards
Type of skeleton that consists of fluid constrained within a layer of flexible tissue.
Hydro-static skeleton
Type of skeleton that looks like an “armor” or “suit” that protects the animal from the outside.
Exoskeleton
Type of skeleton that provides an internal support structure.
Endoskeleton
Category of bones that are located along the central axis of the body, consists of the bones of the head, vertebral column, and rib cage. Protects the organs.
Axial skeleton
Category of bones that consist of the appendages (limbs) and the bones that support them.
Appendicular skeleton
Protects and supports the spinal cord. Consists of 33 vertebrae, separated by cartilage disks that serve as a cushion and enhances flexibility.
Vertebral column
In the appendicular skeleton, this connects the forelimbs to the axial skeleton. It includes (clavicles) collarbone, shoulder blades (scapulas)
Pectoral Girdle
In the appendicular skeleton, this attaches the hindlimbs to the axial skeleton. The hipbones join the backbone in the rear and meet each other in front.
Pelvic Girdle
Bones are lightweight and porous since it has _________ which is a hollow space occupying the center of the shaft of the bone.
Marrow cavity
Marrow that is the nursery for blood cells and platelets.
Red bone marrow.
Type of marrow that replaces the red bone marrow in adults. This type of marrow does not produce blood; however, if blood cells are short in supply, this can convert into red bone marrow.
Yellow bone marrow.
Hard and dense, with canals that house blood vessels and nervous tissue.
Compact bone
Lighter, with large spaces filled with marrow, blood vessels, and nerves.
Spongy bone
An area where two bones meet. Consists of movable bones joined by fluid-filled capsules of fibrous connective tissue and lubricating fluid from cartilage to allow friction-free movement.
Joint
Tough bands of connective tissues that attach bone to muscle.
Tendons
