Types of Synovial Joints 3.4.3 Flashcards
What is a acromioclavicular joint?
What is atlantoaxial joint?
The joint between the first two vertebrae, the bones of the spine
What is a ball-and-socket joint?
A rounded protuberance on the end of one bone in that joint that fits into a cup-shaped indentation on the end of the other bone in the joint
protuberance = bump
What is carpometacarpal joint?
Where the carpal bones connects to the end of the metacarpal bone that leads to the thumb
-is a saddle joint
What are condyloid joints?
The end of one bone in the joint curves outward and the end of the other bone in the joint curves inward
-Motion along two plains
ex. toes
What is a gliding joint?
Joints where two bones coming together are flat and slide past each other (plane joints)
- enables sliding motion in multiple directions (no rotations)
ex.
acromioclavicular (AC) joint
What is a hip joint?
Where the femur meets the pelvic bone
(ball-and-socket joint)
What is a metacarpophalangeal joint?
Joint between metacarpal & proximal phalange that allows wiggling movement
-enables motion along 2 planes (one outward and one inward)
(condyloid joint)
What are pivot joints?
When one bone twists around another bone (rotational joints)
ex. atlantoaxial joints (allows head to move side to side)
What is a saddle joint?
The end of one bone curves outward and the end of the other bone curves inward like two u-shapes hooked together
ex. thumb
