Classification of Joints 3.4.1 Flashcards
What is amphiarthroses?
Joints that permit a limited range of motion between the bones
(cartilaginous)
What are cartilaginous joints?
Connect two or more bones with cartilage
-permit small range of movement
ex.
pubic symphysis joint between the two pubic bones
What is diarthrosis?
Joints that are freely moveable
(synovial joints)
ex.
knee joint
What are fibrous joints?
Connect two or more bones with a dense connective tissue
-permit almost no movement
ex. sutures in the skull
What are hinge joints?
Joints that permit movement on a single plane
flexion = bending your elbow
extension = straightening your elbow
What are joints?
Places where two or more bones connect or come together
-known as articulations
-enables movement (main function)
-permits growth
-provides structural support
What is synarthroses?
Joints that permit little or no movement between the bones connected
(fibrous joints)
ex.
Sutures on the cranial and facial bones
What is synovial fluid?
The fluid that fills capsules within the synovial joints
What are synovial joints?
Contain a capsule filled with fluid to reduce friction between bones
ex.
elbow (most common)
