Brittle bone disease; soft bones that break easily
-cause by mutation in a gene that directs production of collagen (helps hold the bone together)
-bone fractures, loose joints, soft, teeth, curve spine, bow-shaped long bones (dangerous symptom
(casts, assistive devices, physical therapy)

What is osteomalacia?
Special cells in skin absorb sunlight and produce vitamin D (which help your body absorb calcium)
-bones are soft due to decreased calcium (insufficient vitamin D)
-can be treated by increasing vitamin D or calcium consumption
What is osteopenia?
Loss of bone density
What is osteoporosis?
Disease in which bone becomes more porous over time because spaces in spongy bon grow larger
porous (sponge a lot of holes)
-more common a females
-complex disease not fully understood
-risk factors are advanced age, genetics
-symptoms consists of increased risk of fracture, decrease in height, trouble breathing, bone pain, may stoop forward
-treatment includes exercise and healthy diet
