Types of reactions you will see in chemistry Flashcards

1
Q

what are precipitations reactions ?

A
  1. reactions that create solids
  2. double replacement reactions

AB + CD ====== AC + BD

You can get a good idea if precipitation will happen by understanding Solubility rule of compounds (meaning the compound can break in water)

Q

What are Acid- Base (Neutraliation equations)

A
  • Making a salt, these are the reaction that will allows to buffer acids because by making a salt and water ( products) the acid nor the base can’t give off their H+ or OH- to offset the the pH

Overview: understanding acids and base

  1. Know your acid:
    1. Arhenius: gives H +
    2. Brosted: gives protrons +
    3. Lewis: electron acceptor -
    4. general formula: H and X in water
  2. Know your base:
    1. Arrhenius: gives OH -
    2. Bronsted: accept protons +
    3. Lewis: electron donors -
    4. general formula: Metal + OH -
  3. Know your salt: any chemical compounds made from acids reacting with base

Acid + Base ==== Salt + H20

Salt: M (metal) + X ( of the acid) + Water from the H and OH of the acid and base

Q

What are combination reactions

A
  • two or more compounds coming together to form one ( synthesis)

PCl3 + Cl3 == PCl5 (properties of these reactants combined will make different reactants)

Q

Decomposition reactions

A

Spliting up a compound - usually requires the input of heat (endothermic)

What are the compounds that are usually involved?

  1. Salt with carbonate ( CO3-) or metal with CO3- will break down into oxide (oxigen) and CO2
  2. or salt with sulfate or metal with SO2 can break into salt with salfate = oxide and SO2

Q

What are Redox reactions?

A
  1. A reaction where the electrons are moving within the an atom.
  2. Reduction: gain of electron
  3. oxidation: loss of electrons
  • *How it Manifest**
  • Single relpacement*
  • A + BC ==== AB + C usually with one element and 2 compounds and one element is ready to give an electron.
  • Happens at the same time as oxidation

Q

What is a combustion reactions?

A
  1. A reaction that releases alot of heat
  2. Usually requires a hydrocarbon CH + O2 == CO2 + H2O and Heat
  3. This happens often in the Human body
