Equilibrium Flashcards
1
Q
what are the 5 equilibirum rules?
A
- Balance the equations
- No liquid and solid in the equilibrium formula
- You you multiply the equation by n-number than the Keq value must also be multiplied
- if you reverse the equilibrium value so that product becomes the reactiosn than the Keq must be turn to 1/Keq
- If two reaction are added ( as seen in biochem) multiple both Keq to find the over equilibrium of the reactions
2
Q
What is the equilibrium equations and what can we infer of the equilibrium based on the value of Keq?
A
- equation:
- Keq= [product @ equilibrium]/ [reactant concentration @ equilibirum]
- Units: M (moles /liters)
Values of Keq
- if larger than 1 : Product has the upper hand in the the equilibium equation
- If smaller than 1: reactant has the upper hand in the equilibrium.
3
Q
Explain the le chatelier’s principle?
A
- It is a principle that states that nature likes to be in equilibrium
For reactions: A + B ——> C
- increase A reaction will tilt towards making more C
- increase C reaction will tilt towards making more A+B
- increase presure reaction will tilt towards making more C (because of moles in reactant)
- increase volume reaction will tilt towards making more C
Pressure and Volume are only dependent on the number of moles. If you have the same number of moles on both side then the pressure and the volume does not have an impact.
4
Q
What is the only variable that can change an equilibirum?
A
- Temperature is the ONLY variable that can change an equilibrium
5
Q
What is the law of Mass action?
A
- rate of a reaction can only depend on the concentration of the substrate
